Armenian citizenship gives you the full right to live and work in Armenia with no residence or work permits, no annual reapplications under the new 2026 rules, and no reporting of long absences. For diaspora Armenians it is often an emotional homecoming; for long-term residents it is the logical last step after a residence permit.

Team2B lawyers help clients check eligibility, collect and translate documents, and file applications. Here is what you need to know in 2026.

Who can get Armenian citizenship?

Route Main requirements
Naturalization 18+, 3 years of legal residence, Armenian language, knowledge of the Constitution
Armenian origin (diaspora) Proof of Armenian ethnicity; no residence requirement
Spouse of a citizen 2 years of marriage and 365 days of residence in Armenia

What are the naturalization requirements?

  1. Age 18 or older.
  2. Three years of legal residence in Armenia, normally on a temporary or permanent residence permit.
  3. Knowledge of the Armenian language.
  4. Knowledge of the Constitution, shown by a test of 33 questions. You need 17 correct answers and you have one hour.

Ethnic Armenians are exempt from the residence requirement.

How do the routes compare for different applicants?

Applicant profile Residence needed before applying Typical path
Western founder or digital nomad 3 years of legal residence Sole proprietor or LLC, then temporary residence each year, then citizenship
Diaspora Armenian (any passport) None Apply directly with proof of Armenian origin
Spouse of an Armenian citizen 365 days in Armenia and 2 years of marriage Family-based residence, then citizenship
Employee of an Armenian company 3 years of legal residence Work permit (unless EAEU citizen) and residence, then citizenship

Which documents prove Armenian origin?

Diaspora applicants usually rely on civil records showing Armenian ethnicity: their own birth certificate or those of parents or grandparents, old passports or other official documents that name Armenian nationality. Foreign records need an apostille and a notarized Armenian translation. If records are incomplete, we help you assess which documents are most likely to be accepted before you apply.

Why does continuous legal residence matter?

The 3-year rule counts legal residence. Visa-free stays of up to 180 days per year are not the same as residence on a permit. From 1 November 2026 temporary residence permits cannot be extended, so you must file a new application before your current one expires. You also have to report an absence of 183 days or more within 10 days. Gaps or unreported absences can complicate a later citizenship application, so we recommend planning your residence and citizenship timeline together from the start.

How do you apply for Armenian citizenship step by step?

  1. Check your eligibility with a lawyer, especially if your residence history includes gaps or a change of status.
  2. Collect documents: passport, birth certificate, proof of residence or Armenian origin, marriage certificate if relevant. Foreign documents need an apostille and a notarized Armenian translation.
  3. Submit the online pre-application at mcs-citizenship.am (available since 1 January 2026).
  4. Pass the test on the Constitution and, where required, the language check.
  5. Pay the 50,000 AMD state duty.
  6. Wait for the decision, which takes up to 90 days.
  7. Receive the decision and obtain your Armenian passport.

Is dual citizenship allowed in Armenia?

Yes. Armenia allows dual citizenship. You must notify the authorities within one month of acquiring another citizenship. Check your other country’s rules too, since some countries restrict dual nationality.

What about military service?

Men aged 18 to 27 who become Armenian citizens are liable for military service. If you or your son fall in this age range, get advice before applying.

Are the rules going to change?

A draft law (published on e-draft on 8 September 2026, proposed to take effect from 1 January 2028) would require 5 years of residence plus 915 days of physical presence and raise the duty to 250,000 AMD. It is not law yet and may change. If you already qualify, it can make sense to apply under the current rules.

Note also that the residence system itself changes on 1 November 2026: temporary residence permits can no longer be extended and you must reapply each year. Keeping your residence history continuous matters for citizenship, so plan renewals carefully.

Do you still need a residence permit if you are entitled to citizenship?

Often, yes, in the meantime. Citizenship decisions take up to 90 days, plus time to gather documents. If you plan to live, work or run a business in Armenia during that period, you need a legal status: visa-free stay (up to 180 days per year), temporary residence, or, for ethnic Armenians, residence on the Armenian-origin ground. Armenian-origin and family cases are reportedly exempt from the new residence quotas. See our Armenia residence permit guide.
